Terrible quality junk ignition parts...

I just ordered a "genuine" Johnson/Evinrude tune up kit for my 1957 model 5.5 hp Evinrude and the quality of the points is pathetic. They're made in Turkey and the steel they're made out of is thin compared to the old points that came out of it. They wouldn't line up and they won't adjust right. The only way to get the points set is to screw them down and then take my thumb and bend the metal to get the gap set. It's so thin I can actually bend it with my thumb without any effort. I just took them out and threw them in the trash can. Cheap made foreign CRAP!

The "genuine" Johnson/Evinrude coils I purchased were made in Hong Kong and they fit OK unlike Sierra coils. The people that sold this country out and moved the factories overseas should be barred from coming back into the United States. Sorry bunch of $#$%!!

Sometime back I used some cheap crap Sierra ignition parts that my uncle had for the 1966 model 3 hp Johnson motor that I inherited from him and the points were just fine but the coils were junk. The mounting holes in them were not drilled correctly and didn't come close to lining up which is the reason I ordered the "genuine" Johnson/Evinrude parts for my 5.5 hp Evinrude this time.

Now I'm going to have to search to find some new old stock Johnson/Evinrude ignition parts that were made in the US. This ought to be like trying to find a needle in a hay stack.

I'd like to have 5 minutes in a room alone with each of the traitors responsible for this mess they've created in this country!!

Interesting post. It's not that I don't believe you I just hope you are not correct? I have been in the marine business for 57 years. OMC points have been made in Turkey for as long as I can remember. They have been the one true constant in ignition parts. Sierra quality is all over the place. As you correctly stated their coils at the moment are drilled incorrectly & can't be mounted without modifications.
BRP has recently been on back order of the tuneup kits. I hope that does not mean that something has changed with regard to the vendor. I have 16 new kits, but have not used one yet. Points can be found on sites that sell parts at bidding prices.

I just rebuilt a 1960 Johnson 3 H.P. and purchased BHP coils. I didn't use BHP condensers because a condenser is such a simple thing I went cheapo. I didn't touch the points because they looked great and were gaped correctly. Maybe I'm glad I didn't mess with the points.

I hear ya on that, Rook66.
I bought some genuine OMC carb kits for my 90 hp Johnson V4, and one of the kits has a bad needle and seat in it - the carb floods like crazy.
Anybody's guess where they are making this stuff now.
Buying OEM parts means nothing anymore. It's clear they've farmed out manufacturing to the lowest bidder, and then the parts are sealed in an OMC Johnson Evinrude bag to give you that warm fuzzy feeling. Lol.
It's now nearly July, and my boat is still not in the water.
So we get our time wasted by this back and forth BS with new parts that don't work as they should.
In the end, I managed to find a couple of NOS needle and seat assemblies on eBay...when they arrive, I'm gonna put them on and cross my fingers.
When I went to college for auto mechanics, my engine professor said, "Time is money....money is time."
How true that is!!
