need to adjust throttle fricti

need to adjust throttle friction at control box-
can't remove cover[binnacle?]-have depressed release button but no soap-any suggestions?

"Tom, Without knowing what control you have, it is hard to assist.

If you have an 80+ single handle with a square black button for throttle only, the button may need to be popped out to disassemble."

"Tom, I am not an expert by any means. My MerCruiser single lever control had an "allen" screw under the "Throttle only" button, which allowed the handle to come off. It also had four mounting bolts under the trim panel which fit around the handle. You had to pry it out a bit, and turn it to gain access to the screws."
