Transom height

Most small and medium outboar

Most small and medium outboards are called 15 or 20 inch. But many boats have 17 or 21 inch transoms. Why do some boats (aluminum in my case) have an extra inch or two of height on the transom?

" My starcraft chieftan (aluminum as mentioned above) has one of those nice 21 1/2 inch transoms, a 20 inch shaft works fine, but it's bottomed out.. the engine tends to see a little more water than I'd like.

A solution for it though is to go with a motor mount (or jacking plate) in between the outboard and transom, then a 20 or 25 inch shaft can be retro-fit. "
