"I have a 2002 8 hp Johnson with very few hours on a 14 foot aluminum Starcraft. The boat is obviously underpowered, especially when there in any kind of load in it. I have heard that the only difference between the 8 hp and the 15 hp in that series of motors was the carb., and that a 8 can be converted to at 15 just by switching carbs. Any truth to this?"

"I cannot see an 8hp listed for 2002. The 2001 8hp I found was a two stroke while the 2003 4 stroke does not have the same cylinder block so is different,

The 2002 9.9 has the same block as the 15hp so you might be in with a sporting chance with upgrading a 9.9.
