Volvo Penta 280 outdrive gear engagement rough

The outdrive was rough going in and out of gear, and it has progressively got worse over the last year or so. I removed the cable from the drive to see if it was a bad cable or control head related. The control head and cable are as smooth as butter and when I engage the gear by hand its very rough and hard to get into gear and reverse is even worse.

any ideas on what to check next?

Are their any external parts that need service, greace, etc?

You may have eliminated the shift unit and shift cable.
Next, try disconnecting the vertical linkage rod, and operate the eccentric piston by hand.

If the piston does not move freely, purchase O-ring p/n 925093, and remove the eccentric piston housing and look to see if the shift shoe is damaged.

If the piston moves freely in either rotation, then look at the coupling rod (SEQ #3) and/or lock brace (SEQ #45) as shown in this image. When these parts become corroded and sticky, they can cause stiff linkage operation.

Just to qualify my last comment;
The coupling rod, and the force that the coupling rod applies to the lock brace, is for a Reverse gear selection/engagement.
This usually does not cause an issue for FWD gear selection/engagement.

Hi Rick, Thanks alot for the information, much appreciated. When removing the eccentric piston housing I assume I remove these (4) bolts and not the single center larger bolt?

You are welcome, and that would be correct!

The four housing bolt holes dead end, so no sealant is needed on the actual bolt threads.... and the O-ring is within the perimeter of this bolt pattern.

The bolt in the center of the eccentric piston is a shift shoe depth control, and will have small SS shims underneath the head.
The SS shims provide the seal here, but occasionally one or two of them will corrode away a bit.
It would not hurt to pull this bolt, and inspect these shims.
You can re-assemble with a thread sealant if you want to.
