Vro pump

I have a 1990 70hp Johnson outboard. It has not been started in 4 years. The last owner disconnected the oil connection for the VRO pump. I filled the tank with premixed fuel. I replaced a couplr kinked hoses nd am getting fuel to the carbuerator now. The VRO keeps leaking gas. Can I remove the VRO pump and run the boat without it? At present, I can't get the motor to start.

Thanks for your response. I was able to start the motor. There was a red knob on the side of the carbureator that was closed. I am not sure how much to open it, but I opened it some and the motor started right up. If the VRO stands straight up. it doesn't leak. The problem is that the 2 mounting bolts are stripped and fall out. I am not sure if it is okay to tap it to the next size bigger.

If yours is anyhting like my 2000 50hp johnson, the red valve is the overide on the primer valve. Assuming your motor is electric start the primper valve acts like the choke and the red valve is for emergency pull starting, to overide the electric choke. Im not sure which way will be choke on or off but try running the motor to opperating temperature and turn the valve and if the motor bogs down or stalls, turn the valve completely the other way which will be the off position. You dont wana run the motor in half choke and if you have that valve is cracked then thats basiclly what your doing. Hope this helps
