water coming out of inspection plate on side of leg

Have a 1969-70 20 hp, running in the tank i noticed water squirting out from under plate on side of leg ( plate about 1" x 2" ) that is held on by 2 small machine screws. I dont know much about these engines. Normal or problem? Thanks in advance.

That is an access point for the shift rod connecter.------------You could run with that leak for the next 20 years or replace the gasket, easy to make that gasket.

Thanks a bunch, which gasket is it, and is it hard to get at? Not sure of the year, tag is gone of transom bracket. Thanks again

No rocket science here.------------Take the 2 screws out and it is all there , nothing to this job at all !!---------------Make the gasket !

Duh, thanks, there was no gasket there when I took off the cover. Probably been leaking for 20 yrs already and never noticed it until in tank. Thanks again
