Water Hose Seal

I recently replaced the water pump on my 1978 Evinrude 70 hp outboard (model 70873C). It worked great for a couple days but then the tell tale stream became very weak and it started spraying water from the lower unit. Dropped it again and noticed that the connecting end of the water hose doesn't appear the same as before. I seem to recall a membrane like material that I slid the pump assembly up into, but now there is just the copper pipe which I slide the pump assembly up around (not into), and I'm almost certain that it cannot be a water tight seal. Thought that I may have blown out that membrane seal but I can't find the remnants anywhere in the lower unit.

Can someone please offer some advice on how I can create a water tight seal where the water hose meets the water pump assembly?

There is a seal ( short rubber tube ) that goes into the pump housing.-----Then a guide tube goes on with screws.-----Not sure what you mean with ---" membrane "----on this project.------Posting pictures will help.
 
All I know is that I'm missing whatever will create the seal. I have the rigid plastice tube coming up from the pump housing that goes around the copper tube coming down, and there's no way it can be sealed????

Well-----They made thousands of these motor and I think they all sealed quite well.---See post #2-------So post some pictures if you will.------Good luck with the project.

What I do know know is that I'm missing anything rubber around that connection.

Can't you identify whats missing from the parts diagrams on this site

Are you missing the water tube grommet which forms the seal between the water tube and the impeller housing> There is mo seal between the water tube and the guide tube.
