"New to o/b motors - What should water stream be like? ie Solid stream, sputtery with vapor

When I took off the lower unit to replace the seals I looked at the impeller. It looked to be in great shape.

Any help would be great.

"I would think if it is "sputtery with vapor" then that aint a good sign. You would want a solid stream. Could mean that your water pump is bad, when was the last time you changed it?"

"Hey Lee - just bought the boat/motor. When I replaced the seals in the lower unit, I popped off the waterpump cover and looked at the impeller. It seemed to be in great shape. No visible signs of wear. Should have taken a few pics. I just ordered a owner's manual from this site. In the mean time, what should the impeller look like?

It does not need a solid strea

It does not need a solid stream! What you are seeing is correct and it is controlled by the thermostat ( vernatherm ). If you were skiing behind it you would see much more water coming from the exhaust relief.

I will make it simple---at idle it will just spit water and water vapour---at full throttle you will see lots of water-----I talk about the skiing because I used to ski behind these motors when they were "NEW" ----simple

Oh well excuse me for asking a simple question. The main reason y i asked was because my friend had a evinrude 150 and it did what the poster guy was talking about and he didn't change the water pump and guess what the motor seized up!!!

As a person new to o/b motors, I appreciate all the feedback / knowledge. I just ordered a new impeller for the motor and plan on installing before the next ride. No biggee. Just drop the lower unit and pop in the new impeller. Better safe than sorry sittin' on the dock!!!! Again I genuinely appreciate the help/knowledge.

The Evinrude 150 HP and a 66- 80 HP are a totally different machines and from a different era!
 
I am sure there will be an upd

I am sure there will be an update on the performance of the " pisser " when the new impeller is installed.

waiting for the i

hey guys -
waiting for the impeller but took my little aristocraft funliner out today and did a thermal test on the heads. Ran the boat at full trottle for 15 minutes and the pulled the cowl and measured the head temp with infrared sensor. 140-145 degrees. Still planning on changing the impeller but everything seems to be just fine!

"Ok - changed the impeller, ran the boat at various speeds. Took head temp All is good - 134 to 141. Water output did not noticeably change. So, better safe than sorry and I now have a spare impeller in a pinch"
