What about Drive Showers....

What's a Drive Shower?
Is it a gimmick? Is it worth it?
When would you want one? (e.g. Racing? High Performance?)
One popular SS brand is Simrek (<$200)...
 
On high performance/ high horse power drives there is a lot of heat generated in the gear oil.------A drive shower floods the outside of the upper gear housing to assist in cooling the oil.
 
One of those things that say "race" but in real world use are basically just decorative. Like putting a big wing on the back of a 1990's Honda Prelude. You must be running 500+ HP at WFO all the time to see any benefit, and even then you'll probably bust something else before the drive.
 
Sorry guys they are not just for "High Horsepower" and not just a "Decoration"....

If you have a sterndrive, any sterndrive and are on plane for extended periods of time (like a 100 mile run to the canyon off the Jersey Shore), a drive shower will help extend the life of your outdrive.

I agree that the drive shower will help remove heat from the upper gear unit and will extend the life of the drive.......... especially for the Merc A drive, since the A drive does not circulate gear oil from the cooler lower to the upper unit. The Merc B drive and all Volvo Penta stern drives do!

Ayuh,..... I'm with Chris, 'n Rick,.... There's not really a down-side to cooler gears, 'n oil, til ya hit really colder temps,.....

I've always been gonna build 1,.... got all the stuff, just never got 'round to it,....

With the minerals in my water, I 'magine the drive would be gray, rather than black fairly quickly,....

This week the service shop is working on the drive. When their done I would like to paint the drive (2019) which I understand is a big job. After that I'll get a drive shower for the sole reason, like some said above, it will look cool with the new merc black paint job.
