what wires??? Tach Question

I have an 86 e50belcde I am wanting to install a tach on the dash. What kind of tach do you recommend? Does it have to be a marine Tach or as long as it goes within a certain range.

And what wires do I use to hook it up?. The guy that set my Timing on the motor and done a tune up showed me the 4 wire plug for the VRO and said to use the gray wire and I believe the purple wire. there is also a black and tan. He said the tan was for the alarm. My question is where do I connect the wires for the tach if My VRO has been eliminated (unplugged). Do I need to plug it back in and disconnect the alarm wire. He assured me it was easy to do, and Id have him do it for me but he is over 2 hours away..

Purple wire is positive on back of tach black is ground(-) and gray ifrom rectifier/regulator on motor set it to 6P and yes. use a marine tach. Good luck

Do those wires( purple back and gray) go up to the controls at the helm or do I need to run new wires to hook them up. Also will I need to plug back in the VRO and cut the alarm(brown/tan) wire?

Is that vro plug back at the engine or at the control box? I think I'm simply telling you the function of each of the wires; no, don't see why you need to plug the vro back up.

It is unplugged at the engine. I havent looked at the wires yet under the dash to see if the purple and black tan and gray wires are there.

The wires you need should "all" be either under the console OR just beneath the key if you're using a regular white side bolted control box... whichever you may be using.

Yes white side mounted OMC controls. Ok Ill get me a tach and try it. Thanks.

Okay.... Should be a rubber electrical plug right there (under the key switch) that the tachometer would plug into. Some of the marine tachs come equipped with such a plug to simply plug into it.

THANK YOU. I didnt know about the plug. Went down and sure enough there is a plug. Thanks again. I will find a tach that will plug in.

Very good... something's going right for you.

Besides having a electrical plug, remember also to get a tachometer that operates off of the engine's charging system that has a dial on the back of it that can be set to #6.

Gotcha. Thanks Again Joe. Do you happen to sell what I would need on your ebay store. Ive looked on there and seen the wiring harness for OMC Evinrude separate from a tach, but not sure what to exactly get. I am an hour from the closest boat shop. Thanks
