That's a 1986, Yamaha built "C" model, electric start, long shaft (20").

This was (is) an oil injected model, but came with Merc's Auto-Blend system.

An "off line" system where the gas was fed to the Auto-Blend (which was an all in one oil tank/blender) and then the mixed gas was fed to the motor.

If the auto blend is still with it, disconnect it and throw it as far away as possible - you want to lessen the chance of it spontaneously reconnecting.

Auto-Blend killed more motors than any other single source.

If it's already gone - say thank-you to the previous owner and mix your gas at 50:1..."

Have a Mariner 40ELO Code 6E

Have a Mariner 40ELO Code 6E9 L
Serial 450256

Runs a little rough at low speed but OK in midrange. Yesterday on first run of year (in Michigan) ran fine at high RPM for about 1 minute and then rapid decrease in RPM even though thottle still open wide. Tried about 5 minutes later - same result. Let engine cool for about 10 minutes. Seemed to run at high RPM fine for about 1 minute. I didn't want to risk damage so returned to dock. Any ideas?

Also interested in any year info based on serial #.

Thanks in advance.

Motor is on a 20' Crest pontoon boat.

"Mike, that's a 1989 Yamaha built Mariner.

The symptoms you describe sound most likely to be either a clog in one or both of the carbs or a fuel pump that's starting to give up.

Pumping the fuel bulb on the gas line can help determine if it's the fuel pump - if pumping makes a difference, that's your culprit (the fuel pump) - if not, remove, disassemble and clean the carbs (and maybe throw in a carb kit).

While you are at it, if the waterpump hasn't been touched in more than 2 years, at least replace the impeller as well and change out the gear oil...."

Graham: Thanks for the info. What book / manual would you recommend for detailed instructions for the procedures you advise above?
