"Greetings all

I have a Mariner 20EL that I'm trying to date: serial number is 6A9 L 550858. I believe that it is a UK model and it was made in Japan. Additionally I want to convert it back to tiller to run it on my inflatable tender: will anything get damaged if I don't connect it to a battery? (obviously I appreciate that I won't be able to use the electric start...)

Any information and general comments about the model would be most welcome.

Thanks in Advance, Mike"

"I just acquired a used outboard engine. I am told it is a 15 horsepower, Mariner engine. It has two cylinders. I found a number on the transom mounting bracket which appears to be 82CS04462. Can you confirm the make, year of manufacture and the proper fuel/oil ratio? If so, is the SELOCS manual the best resource book for my year model? Thanks for any help you can provide. Dan"

"Upon closer inspection, the number on my engine has two number 2's at the end of the sequence and should read 82CS044622.
Are there any pros or cons, strengths or weaknesses with this year model engine? Anything I should be alert for or symptoms I should watch for?
Again, thank you for any info, help or suggestions that you can provide to me. Dan"

"Chris that's a 1982, electric start, long shaft model built by Yamaha for Mercury.

This particular model was not in production very long and not many got over to the North American market.

Some limited parts are still kicking around for this model, but even routine needed parts, such as carb kits are no longer available..."

"George, the motor itself is actually a Tohatsu painted black with Merc decals on it.

They are decently engineered and well built with no real issues.

However, it is a 4 stroke. That means you need to follow the maintenance schedule in the owners manual to a T or it will quickly turn into a paperweight.

Personally, I would change the oil/filter at twice the recommended interval unless the motor is run "alot" (over 200 hours of run time a year).

Since this is a "used" motor I would initially spend the money for a couple hours of service and have the valves adjusted (most likely never been done). They don't get out of sync all the time, but would normally recommend having them set after the second season the motor is run and then leave them alone.

With any used motor it's always wise to replace the impeller, change oil/filter and change the spark plugs. A can of Mercury "powertune" sprayed through the carb or some "seafoam" added to the gas wouldn't hurt either - gets all the "cooties" out of the system and helps remove any built up carbon in the cylinders..."

"Graham, Thank you for your p

"Graham, Thank you for your prompt response. I think it would be a prudent act to put an in-line fuel filter in the gas line going from the fuel tank to the engine. Do you have any recommendation as to a particular filter or do most marine supply shops have what I need? Further, should I put the filter between the tank and the priming bulb or between the priming bulb and the engine connection?
Today I had an interesting problem. The engine started easily and I began to idle away from the pier. Everything went smoothly and I increased speed to about 5 mph. We motored along like that for about 15 minutes. I then increased the speed slowly to WOT. That seemed to go well . I ran like that for about 5 minutes as we returned to the pier. While still at WOT I noticed a momentary hesitation or maybe a "miss". I continued at WOT and top speed was maintained to a safe distance from the pier. I slowly reduced speed to make my approach to the pier. I finally slowed to an idle and in about 2 minutes the engine died. I could not restart the engine.
My next step is to take the engine to the dealer for the inspection and tune up you suggested. Do you think the engine died and would no restart because it has trash in the carburetor or do suspect other reasons? Thank you for your suggestions and insight. Dan"
