Which Battery? Honda 50

I have been using a standard starting battery for my honda 50 for the past 5 years and am thinking of replacing it for security.

Is there a particular battery ideally suited for this engine? (starting vs. dual purpose. vs. deep cycle?)

I dont run any major electronics besides VHF and fish finder --- I am assuming a starting battery is the way to go, but would a dual purpose or even a deep cycle do any HARM?

The manual says a battery with a minimum of 420 cca or 546 mca....for the carbureted 50. 582 cca or 756 mca for the fuel injected 50.

Since it is mainly used for starting, stick with a starting battery.

Any of the other two would work, but they would be a compromise. Also, deep cycle batteries are not made for starting and it may affect the battery's life span.....not that Marine batteries have a good life span anyway.

Others may jump in an have a lot more technical reasons but I just try to keep things simple by putting in the right battery for its use and put in the highest capacity battery I can afford.

Battery technology has made some impressive leaps since you purchsed the one you are using now. There are "dual pupose" batteries that provide both cranking AND deep discharge capabilities. They have proven to be very effective as well as very reliable. But, a good one costs almost twice as much as their single use counterparts. So, I'm with Mike (surprise, surprise) on this one and say "K.I.S." keep it simple. (I only add the "stupid" when talking to myself).

As with anything you use on your boat, battery maintenance is very important to reliable operation and long life. And, since your present battery has been with you fo 5 years, I would say that what you have been doing seems to have worked well.

I have used Interstate brand batteries for years with great success. Wonderful company. So, along with Mike's cold cranking specs. I know you can't go wrong with an Interstate battery.

Hope you pick a good one.
