Opinion on spark plug cap, old school pin or resistor type

I have a 76 evinrude 135hp, wondering if I should use the old school press in pin style cap or the resistor type screw in. Thanks

That engine demands Champion QL77JC4 plugs gaped at either .030 (long life)... or... .040 (strong spark)

Use the type plug connectors the engine calls for (Spring Connector & Boot).

I have always thought I supposed to be using the surface gap UL77v or L16V, so it's ok to use a plug I can gap?

Those type "surface gap plugs" have no heat range regardless of their numbered designation. They're a cold running plug which is prone to fouling. The Champion QL77JC4 plugs set as mentioned were recommended to be used by OMC via a bulletin many years back.

Trust me, I've been a serious minded technician (fancy word for a mechanic) with OMC since 1960 (retired 1991). I know of what I speak.

Joe would you also put these in a 1977 140 ?
my friend has the 140 with the surface gap, I did not know about any of the bulletins for the v4's.

Yes, absolutely. You and your friend will no doubt notice a improved difference.
