Johnson 115 HP engine / PTT is stuck in the up position.

Due to a very shallow water level, as I was approaching the dock, I inadvertently rose the engine as far as it could go. When I tried lowering it to lock it in for trailering home, the motor hummed when pressing the "up" button, but wouldn't go down after pressing that button. My "manual release" screw is stuck solid from the previous owner having it in salt water. Also, the head of that screw has been rounded down from someone trying to loosen it. I've contacted a machine shop regarding the removal of it, but in the meantime, I was hoping there was some way to "bleed" the lift-assist piston. I am assuming that would allow the engine to drop on its own. I certainly would appreciate any suggestions that might help me remedy this issue!

Problem caused usually by having the engine tilted and not locked in, allowing the engine to bounce up/down, causing hydraulic buildup on wrong side of oil pump.

Model # ?? - No idea which type PTT you have. If usual 1 tilt cyl, 2 trim ram, do the following.

Engine in full tilt, supported. Looking at the unit, see the large slotted screw on the left side of the unit (check valve). Remove the valve, the shuttle valve, and the 2 springs. Look inside of the chamber. You'll be looking at the back side of another check valve. Look at the hole in the backside of the valve you removed. You'll need a punch that fits inside that hole. Put the punch inside of the hole in that valve, tap it with a hammer to release the hydraulic pressure. Watch you don't get hit with the spray. Reassemble the shuttle valve, springs, outer check valve. Fill the oil reservoir and test.

There is a manual release screw on the side of the transom bracket. You can insert a flat blade screw driver and turn counter clockwise to relieve the pressure. DO NOT have your hands anywhere near the engine bracket when doing this. It can come down very fast.

Kevin... read post #1 over again, he explains a problem with that release.
