Honda 225 max rpm 3500

Ok . So I have a 2002 Honda 225 outboard. The engine runs great. Thanks to chalkman , what a great help. Replaced all filters.EVERYTHING is clean. Then engine runs great up to 3500. It just won’t go over 3500. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes it is new to me. I had to do some touch up on the engine , all filters and water separators etc. I ran it yesterday for the first time after fixing everything. It ran great , but from what I’ve read it should run up to 5000 rpm.
 
Dry weight 3500 and the 225HP motor is about standard for it. Shows 300HP max

If the motor is healthy then it is most likely the prop pitch.
 
Well thanks for the info. When you say dry weight 3500 what exactly do you mean? What do you think the pitch should be on the prop. At 3500 I was at 32 mph
 
Dry weight is what the boat weights with no motor, gas, water, gear, just the bare boat

I don't know what prop normally comes on the boat, but should be able to reach WOT
Looked at a couple grady's and found a boat test on a 218 which had a 250hp Yam using a 15x15.25 prop reaching 44.8mph at 5900 RPM

If this motor came from a twin engine or lighter boat it would have a higher pitch prop. Could also be the prior owner wanted to keep the prop it had and installed another

Thanks for all of your help. I will check the pitch on the prop tomorrow
 
Might have something else going on. Changing to 15P will only increase the WOT rpm 2 to 400 rpm

Assuming this is a fuel injected OB
Might do some general test like fuel pressure at the rail, check compression, see if throttle is moving TPS to WOT.
