growling noise coming from rear-end sounds like someone grinding gears in a car

I have a feeling it's an 80s vintage mechanical shift Fossildrive. There was no 4.3L in the electric shifts (225 odd fire yes, 3.8 & 4.3L no). I'd also check the gear lube in the intermediate housing.

growling noise coming from rear-end sounds like someone grinding gears in a car

986037 does not turn up a search result. So what year & type of drive are you dealing with? It's hard to believe anyone will even look at 30 + year old I/O

Alpha One Gen One Shift Cable Binding

Ok but did you use the correct replacement washer or the "one from the side stud" as you stated in post #3? If it's the "one from the side stud" that is your problem. You could even hammer the original cone shaped one flat if desperate. Beyond that, I'm done answering your posts & trying to...

79 Evinrude 75HP (75943R) - Starter engages immediately, but only when solenoid is mounted

These solenoids should not be grounded to or thru the case, but strictly thru one of the 2 small studs. The 2 small studs simply go to the energizing coil, so which wire (yellow/red & black) goes to which small stud is irrelevant. Actually, the case is plastic and has a rubber sleeve so how...

Alpha One Gen One Shift Cable Binding

You said in post #8 above: The bushing and little rubber ring under the metal washer all seems to be intact and in good shape. *What "bushing & little rubber ring" under the metal washer are you referring to? To be clear, the shift shaft bushing #49 treads into the gearcase. It contains a seal...

95 volvo penta cooling system confusion.

Let's start by saying that OMC & VOLVO didn't join forces (called the "joint venture") until 1994. Most OMC 1993 & earlier used the clutch dog OMC drive & the water pump was in the upper portion of the outdrive. I don't know which engine models tranferred over to the new joint venture drive at...

Alpha One Gen One Shift Cable Binding

Just to clarify, did you pull the upper off the transom or just drop the lower? With the correct washer (flat, not bent) there is a bit of vertical freeplay in that brass shoe. BUT in your case zero clearance/vertical free play.

Propeller hub length issue. 85 Johnson 90 hp V4

Take off any old thrust hub that may still be stuck on the taper of the shaft. New thrust hub is the silver disc on that picture. Put it on. TBH, I don't remember them being different.... Also, be sure you are putting the black insert pointy end 1st. (I don't think it will even go in backwards...

Alpha One Gen One Shift Cable Binding

The washers from the studs are too thick & too small a diameter to bridge the shift shaft bushing correctly. The brass shoe is hard as he'll. I've seen 1 bend but it's not common. And it can only be bent trying to shove an upper unit onto the bell housing. So if you only puller the lower, no...

    Mercury 50HP Electric issue

Yellow to yellow, which one doesn't matter. It's A/C currency on the way to rectifier to become DC.

    2000 50hp running rich.

Follow the carb bowl vents, they gang together into a rubber tube that exits front of motor pointing down. It's sort of above & if I recall correctly just behind the tilt tube. Gets plugged up with insects & debris & float bowl(s) doesn't vent.

    1990 Mach one explorer questions

If it's an Alpha it's in the lower unit. If it's a Bravo then it's belt drive on front of the engine. Sorry to be harsh but 1st thing you need to do is know what you are working on.

60 hp mercury 4 stroke, hit log no forward, reverse good

I stand corrected, that is the newer generation with the nut under the seal housing. You'll need to work it loose (pry carefully) then remove nut #25. There is a special wrench for that.
