Honda BF150 erratic running at high RPM

There are also other vacuum tests that can be done, one is to measure the vacuum the fuel pump is able to develop and the other is to measure any restriction in the fuel system between the tank and fuel pump/filter. Iboats has a section that explains how to do both using a fuel pressure/vacuum...

Narrow Down Source of Noise in 1990 OMC Cobra Outdrive

The gimble bearing should rotate very smoothly when turned with your finger. U joints can fool you, is there any sign of rust coming from the rubber seals? Sometimes wear is not apparent until they are taken apart. I replaced the gimble in mine about 20 years ago and the U joints are the same...

    Seized VP 5.0GL - Options/Insights

I have never seen any aftermarket drives for VP, there may be some aftermarket parts but that's all as far as I know. Aftermarket is a mixed bag if you read reviews of SEI drives there is good and bad. Same like with aftermarket auto parts! That's the lament of auto mechanics everywhere.

Unless you have very well developed mechanical and fiberglass/wood composite skills looking for a bargain in a fiberglass boat is a fool's errand. It will end in frustration, or pouring money into something that won't be worth what you spent on it. Save your money till you can afford a nice late...

I would not go forward with this deal because the boats problems have not been properly diagnosed by a competent mechanic. Your friend will have a tough time selling it for what he thinks it’s worth. As I said a reman engine could be 5,000 and rebuilt drive another 5,000. If that’s the case the...

Did you check the gear oil with the dipstick in the top cover?

    omc sterndrive coupler bushing play

Must be a Cobra, I don’t think there should be any play up & down when the alignment tool is in the splines. That suggests that the rubber has deteriorated to the point when you need a new coupler.

The problem with this situation is the unknowns. You don’t know if the engine can be re-habbed or not. You don’t know if the outdrive needs just a re-seal or a rebuild. On the high end a new/reman engine is about $5,000, and so is a reman outdrive! You just don’t have enough info to make an...

You will have to count the # of threads exposed on the shift cable because you have to remove the retainer nut to get the outdrive off. Then you’ll be able to get the adjustment close when you reinstall the drive. These are HEAVY, if you have a bad lower back be careful! I built an outdrive...

I don’t think the engine is seized but there must be a leaky seal on the outdrive, the gear oil looks milky. Could be a bad propshaft seal or even leaky drain plug gaskets. I would try to do a compression test but it would be best to put in a fresh set of spark plugs and get it running first. On...

And if there was evidence of water in the cyls, they should have sprayed a rust dissolver in each cylinder and in addition some fogging oil, let it soak in for a few days and then try to crank it over again. I had salt water in my engine (front 2 cyls, blown head gasket), when I discovered it...

Is this boat in freshwater or salt water? If in freshwater you can often rehab an engine that suffered water ingestion all depending on the cause. In salt water you also can but your actions must be immediate. Also even if the boat is structurally fine from being stored inside you still have two...

1990 4.3 mercruiser - power steering leak at cooler.

I have done mine 24 years the same as Jack above describes. If in a really cold climate might want to use -100 antifreeze because the -50 and -60 starts to get hard at 5* to 0*F. Put a gallon of it in the freezer and watch what happens.
