    New member boat restoration project

It took awhile but I have put together a dual alternator belt drive that fits well with the engine design and gives me both a 12V and a 24V charging alternator system. I have a few more tweaks left to do but the majority of it is complete.

3.0L Mechanical fuel pump fails when hot

I had a similar problem on a diesel engine in a tub grinder. The inlet was picking up debris in the tank or in the suction line and plugging the line. When the engine stops, the suction is relieved and the debris loosen and clear the line. You can test this by running a temporary line into...

Water in the cylinders - OMC 460

Why did you take off the heads? Did you have a miss or a compression problem? Is your system raw water in the block or fresh water and antifreeze? Off hand my guess is there may be a crack in the head, especially if some of the water passages were blocked causing a hot spot. Another source...

    1998 Mercury 90hp outboard won't start

Air, fuel, compression, ignition and timing. I'd be looking at those things again. Also in a two stroke, you have to look at air pumping as well. I have seen engines that will run fine with water muffs on but won't start when the prop is submerged.

    CAT 3216B

I think you are talking about a 3126. Inline six, 1.2L per cylinder, so 7.2L total. Compression is not normally tested in CAT diesel engines. If it doesn’t have compression it simply won't fire, or it will run rough, make a lot of smoke and have excessive blowby from the breather. Assuming...

3208 Heat exchanger bolt torque on bonnets

What size bolt is it? All CAT service manuals have a bolt torque chart by thread size. From memory a 5/16 bolt (1/2" head) is 18 ft lbs. 3/8 (9/16 head) is 32 and 1/2 bolt (3/4 head) is 75. Everything else I look up.

1974 Correct Craft Reverse rotation SBC 350 camshaft question

You will need a different camshaft. A standard camshaft turning the same rotation as standard will still operate with the same firing order, but the crank will not put all of the pistons in time with it. You will need a camshaft that matches the piston positions. Consider an inline three...

    Gray marine 6 cyl

That engine is a Detroit Diesel 6-71 introduced in 1933. It is a two stroke inline six with 71 cubic inches per cylinder. It should weigh about 2300 pounds without the gear attached. Early engines were marketed as Grey Marine for GMs introduction into the marine propulsion market. A...

I agree that the load is too heavy SOME of the time, but not at lower speed settings for continuous operation. The power drops off from full throttle with the cube of the change in speed or RPM. If 100% power is being used at 12 knots, then at 8 knots the power required is only 30% of full...

    New member boat restoration project

Hello to everyone! I am new to the forum and have moderate boating and boat repair experience. I am a diesel generator mechanic and have been in the custom engine business since 1979. I own my own engine / generator repair business in Northern Virginia. So my wife says to me... "What are...
