I just got this motor (65273S) and took it out on the little Bayliner Mosquito that it came on. It has a 17P prop on it. With the hammer down, it ran at about 4000 rpm at 28mph, and then occasionally it would bounce up to 5000 rpm and 35mph after running it about 20 minutes. The 2 subsequent...
Thanks, I actually remember that part from a 8hp Johnson where it was missing.
But I did finally find the issue with my 135hp Rude. It was just a sticking timer base. Back to rippin'(y)
Well, after going to the bottom of this rabbit hole looking for the no spark on 1 issue, I never found why it wouldn't spark below 500rpm. Oh well, it doesn't really matter as long as it sparks above 500rpm. So after putting it all back together, it still had the same problem of not revving...
Thanks for carb info. That answers my question.
I took it to the dock today, but it's still having issues. I'm actually not ready to start troubleshooting my issue, which is that is not able to accelerate past idle. I can put it forward or reverse and it doesn't die. But it won't go beyond...
I have a 1975 Evinrude 135hp and have had some running issues. After going all through the spark side of it, I turned my attention to the fuel side. I found that whoever was inside the carbs last didn't put in the little clip that connects the needle to the float in each carb. What would be...
Well, I started it up on muffs and it sparks on #1 as soon as it fires up. Still not while cranking. It may have been doing that all along and not even be the issue.
Now, it won't stay running. It fires up and then immediately RPMs drop and it cuts out. Before, it would start up fine and...
Right, I just swapped the leads. So I get what you're saying. Maybe I've improved things slightly along the way. But the last time I had it in the water, I was running it up to around 1000rpms and was down that #1 cylinder. But, I'll try it again and hopefully it's better now. Thanks.
I didn't find fault with any of the above. No grease on the base. Flywheel looks fine inside. I did clean up the ground points on the starter, which helped a bit.
Thanks. I think we're getting somewhere. I pulled the plugs and it cranked at 600rpm with the new starter. That produced good spark on #1. So I cleaned up the mount points on my OEM starter and block(NOT painted like I thought:unsure:) and reinstalled that one and it hit 700rpm. So I put...
I put my cheapo digital tach on it while cranking and I'm getting 290-300rpm. It's noticeably faster than before. So I decided to put my original stator and timer base back on it and now I have spark on 2, 3, and 4. Where the recently purchased used stator and timer base were giving me just 2...
And I just took the battery to Autozone and it load-tested fine.
How is the starter grounded? If all surfaces of the starter are painted, how can it ground through the bolts?
So a new starter later, and the same thing is happening. 8.5V going to the starter. I load tested the battery with my multimeter and it drops as low as low as 10.7V as I crank it. What is a normal reading?
Well, I put in the new starter solenoid. I already had one coming because one post had stripped threads. Put it in and still 8.5V coming out. I pulled the starter and cleaned it all out and refreshed the contacts. The brushes still had plenty of meat. Now its coming out at 9V. So a little...
