    BF30A Mystery :'(

Well I spent hours backflushing until I was confident everything was clear. Covering the orifices with my finger to direct the carb cleaner was the trick. It seems either the slow air jet or the slow jet tube was the issue. Man, I hate carbs. Engine is finally running as it should. With the...

    BF30A Mystery :'(

Thanks for the info. All the orings are good and haven't been damaged. Floats are not filled with any gas or water, and needles are in perfect condition. I have all the carbs apart right now, so I would love to hear your process of clearing and checking the main jet. After playing around a bit...

    BF30A Mystery :'(

Also the problem is worse when the engine is cold, and gets much better when the engine is up to temp.

    BF30A Mystery :'(

Yes, as it turns out I am an idiot and switched two bullet connectors. No spark was a bad kill switch. Anyway, compression is back to what it should be after my overhaul. I'm happy with everything and it's running well, but it seems I still have the same pesky problem. Must be the carbs hahahaha...

    BF30A Mystery :'(

Hey guys. Finally finished a rebuild on this engine. Couldn't source new pistons or valves, so I was forced to reuse them :( pistons were in perfect shape but valves were pretty pitted. Old rings were way out, so new rings, lapped the old valves and worked to get them to seat perfect, all new...

    BF30A Mystery :'(

Blow by seems to be a more reasonable explanation honestly. I wonder if it has gotten just bad enough for my engine to finally realize some performance issues such as the idle problem that started all of this. Anyway, thanks for the parts website guys. I'll start looking into doing a...

    BF30A Mystery :'(

Jgmo, thanks for the tip with the WD-40, did exactly as you said. Also, I did your cross cylinder leakage test and it made no difference. Anyway, I have determined the source of the air leaving my cylinders to be from the oil drain hole at the bottom of the head, not from my cylinder 3 intake...

    BF30A Mystery :'(

Thanks for the responses guys. Jgmo, thanks for clarifying basically my position on this engine. I know that the readings are low, I've posted enough on this forum and heard it a million times, but those readings have been consistent for years without any change, and the engine has always run...

    BF30A Mystery :'(

Hello guys, its finally time for me to post on here again after going through every trick I could pull out of my hat to figure out yet another problem with my 30+ year old engine. I hope you wizards are more perceptive than me, because I am beyond frustrated and defeated. Here's the problem...

    More BF50 issues

Hopefully you found your issue. If the jet on that carb was clogged, it's possible you have some debris in your fuel system that could affect the other ones to. I agree with iang, clean everything in the fuel system just to be sure.

BF5A revs up then wants to die after throttling up or closing choke

Cleaned it three times, inspected everything, replaced any suspicious parts.

BF5A revs up then wants to die after throttling up or closing choke

Thanks jgmo, gotta say you are one of the best contributors on this forum, so just want to let you know I appreciate your help every time. I tried the first thing you said, spraying carb cleaner around the intake manifold and other areas of the carb with no changes in rpm. I will try it again...

    More BF50 issues

For issue #1: In my experienece, you probably just have some crud stuck in your cooling system, it will eventually work itself out if it hasn't already. Even the tiniest piece of debris can clog the telltale, but all you need to do is shoot some compressed air up there while the engine is...

BF5A revs up then wants to die after throttling up or closing choke

Title says it. At first, the engine would start but couldn't maintain idle, so I cleaned the carb, replaced failing parts, and inspected all jets/passages. Replaced/cleaned fuel system components and fuel lines. Now the engine will idle, but wants to die out after throttling up or closing the...

BF30A Bogging under load mid to high RPM

Engine is a BF30A 1997. Bogging only happens under load; when not in gear the engine will rev up to the limiter just fine no issues. When under load the engine will rev to mid rpm no problem, but as soon as I give it the beans it just bogs down and won't put out any more power. Sounds like the...

    BF30A Won't Start

Hey guys, you've saved me with this engine in the past (BF30A LHSA pre-1997), and I'm hoping you brilliant people will do it again, cause I'm all out of ideas. Let me give you the run down. I would say this engine started having suspicious problems about a week ago, 2 trips before the engine...

Bf30A - Questions after Carb Rebuild

Motor is a Bf30A LHSA pre-1997 Hey all, I just finished rebuilding my carbs for my motor. It was running very rough before, but after I rebuilt and cleaned the carbs, it started up quickly and sounded beautiful. I am still seeing some concerning signs though, so I am hoping someone can help me...

BF30A - Reasons for sudden weak telltale?

My motor is a BF30A LHSA pre-1997 with over 3000 hours on it. The telltale usually runs very strong, but recently, it is running quite weak. I will add that the transition from strong to weak was very sudden. At the beginning of a fishing trip it was strong, and at the end, it was weak. I have...

    Stuck Choke? Honda 30

Hey guys, I've been having some issues with my Honda Bf30A. After coming back from a fishing trip not too long ago, the motor was idling really high. Not sure if this was related, but that same day I found out that my lower unit oil seals were compromised, and that the oil mixed with water. I...

    Gear case oil seals questions

Aloha everyone, I have a Honda 30 HP pre-1997 motor, this thread is a continuation of my previous thread: http://www.marineengine.com/boat-forum/showthread.php?448475-Motor-sucked-air-and-overheated-help-please So my motor overheated, and I just got around to inspecting and changing the...
