9.5hp inner exhaust plate has a small fuel leak

Finished product after replacing shift rod boot seal, the inner exhaust manifold plate gasket and reattaching the powerhead to the exhaust housing with Loctite 518. No more exhaust leak with my 1973 Evinrude 9.5hp. Runs and idles fine with lid on! :)...

9.5hp inner exhaust plate has a small fuel leak

Update: I used both the Permatex No.2 but it did not seal perfectly. I then used the Loctite 518 flange sealant and so far no leakage between the powerhead and exhaust housing. Good to know I can get around the gasket here.

9.5hp inner exhaust plate has a small fuel leak

I'm going to try Permatex No. 1 Form a gasket but before I do, what about Gel Seal/Loctite 518 for reattaching exhaust housing to powerhead? Have used this successfully to repair 9.5hp powerheads with running issues that have leaked fuel-oil mixture between the crankcase halves.

9.5hp inner exhaust plate has a small fuel leak

With this 9.5hp motor design, each time you want to check the shift rod boot seal you have to separate the exhaust housing from the powerhead because the metal plate that holds it in place with 3 screws will not come out otherwise, due to the shape of the copper water tube and the way it sits in...

    Rope start detail

As Timguy said that spring needs replacing as it's been deformed somewhat. You also have put the starter cup back to front. Should be like this...

9.5hp inner exhaust plate has a small fuel leak

Thanks fdrgator. I forgot to mention I did check the shift rod boot seal and also the seal is intact on top of the water pump. All bolts/screws came out well fortunately. I have run another 9.5hp in that half cut out plastic container with the hood on without any issues. The only bit that has...

9.5hp inner exhaust plate has a small fuel leak

Hello, I have an Evinrude 9.5hp that runs well without hood on but dies with the hood and noticed a small fuel/oil mixture leak from the bottom on the inner exhaut mainfold plate that attaches to the port side of the crankcase. I pulled it apart and it wasn't obvious where along that gasket...

    Fuel Pump 0438560 vs 0438555

Hello, does anyone know the difference between the these two fuel pumps as they look identical otherwise. The 0438560 or 438560 is used on a select model of 9.9/15hp (mainly electric start in the later 80's and a late production tiller series in 1987 compared to the more common smaller square...

    Has anyone done this before?

Thanks Racerone! Definitely going to do what you say.(y) Your experience has reassured me and it's a two stroke motor with no valves (if that's an actual issue with 4 stroke motors as some have said when I did my own searching). Cheers.

    Has anyone done this before?

Thanks Edchrist, some good advice there and I'm going to take such precautions in the future as it did fly off much to my surprise. I have an Aerpro inspection camera and I turned the flywheel to BDC but I struggled to locate it even though it definitely flew in. Frustrated, I rotated the...

    Has anyone done this before?

Hi, I was spraying the cylinders on my V4 Johnson with Sta-Bil fogging oil which I have done numerous times before but on this occasion the spray tube on the end of the can nozzle blew off, straight into one of the cylinders. Tried to fish it out with a flexible grabbing tool but no go at all...

Question on alternative gearcase oil seals for the more experienced

Hi because I'm based in Australia the wait for my early 80s V4 Johnson driveshaft and prop shaft bearing housing inner and outer seals is longer than I hoped so went to a bearing shop and they matched the driveshaft bearing housing seals (p/n 0321453) inner & outer diameter to an all rubber one...

Johnson Evinrude 1992 25hp Lower Front Rubber Mount

Hi all I have a 1992 Johnson 25hp where the lower front rubber mount has come apart from one of the plates, as pictured. Part number is 0321469 but is now obsolete. Was wondering if there was a way the rubber mount can be reattached to the plate, if anyone has tried or knows? Apparently it is...

15hp block repair, Engine shop drilled right through cylinder head bolt holes

Hi all, I removed a 1978 powerhead with two broken head bolts and took it to an Engine rebuild shop. They removed them and inserted helicoils but in the process drilled right through to the other side. Well I didn't expect that! When looking at the engine from the back, where the head is, the...

    Evinrude 9.9hp sideways wobble

Hi, my 1979 Evinrude 9.9hp short shaft has some sideways wobble of the steering & transom bracket that connects to the exhaust housing but no obvious forward or aft movement. I've been reading that when the upper/lower motor mounts in the exhaust housing fail you will get obvious play in the...

Swivel Adjustment Screw on 70s and early 80s 9.9 and 15hp

Hi all, just wanted to check with on this earlier model style swivel adjustment screw on the 9.9 and 15hp motors. This is second one that is totally stuck and the motor needs tensioning as it turns too freely. I'm wary to use an impact screw driver on it as it way well break. Any tips as seems...

    Advice on 15hp block damage

Have a 1978 15hp that had a corroded water cover plate at the bottom in front of the thermostat and also noticed a smaller leak on the top of the head, so decided to replace head gasket together with the water cover and it's gasket. When I took the head gasket off did not expect to see this at...
