    Drive shaft identity

The 4.5-6-8hp's from the 80-90's are .437 dia. with the flat impeller 8" up. 10 splines would be '89+ and 25 " would be a short shaft ???

Here we go again. No spark on cylinder 1 on 1975 135hp Johnson

I’m no pro, but here are my thoughts. The stator provides primary voltage for the power pack. I think it is either good or bad. When my stator went out, I had weak spark equally on all plugs. The timing base is the trigger. Since you changed it and the problem persisted, that indicates to me...

Here we go again. No spark on cylinder 1 on 1975 135hp Johnson

Sounds like you have access to some parts. My 1975 85hp would start and idle, then stall when applying power. Even though it checked out, the stator was bad. The same thing can happen to the timer base. With 50 year old electronics, the insulation on the windings can break down just enough to...

    1974 Evinrude 6 hp Compression / Idle

I have 2 other 6 hp’s with compression of 85 and 90 psi. Those two run great. I have another with 55 psi. That one will stall unless I keep it revved up. Then there’s this one at 75 psi that runs “OK” but not as good as the first two. So that’s where I’m coming from. I know the 9.5’s will run...

Gap is about 12 thousands. Still think I can only gain 5 psi?

    1974 Evinrude 6 hp Compression / Idle

I picked up a '74 6 hp cheap. I got it running but the idle is poor with compression of 75 / 75 psi. I took it apart and both cylinders mic 1.940 / 1.938, so .002 out of round. I have a set of NOS STD piston rings. Would this be a good candidate for a hone and re-ring? What compression could I...

OMC Prop History: 387334 to 763588

A 7" pitch is about the most you can put on a 6 hp, the 8" is for a 9.5 hp. I put a 8" on a 6hp in a pinch and it was way too much propeller.

    1977 85hp starting issue.

You have 2 carbs on that motor, so if 2 cylinders are not firing, a clogged carb is a possibility. Considering the age of the motor, a power pack and a stator may be needed if they are original. I have a low hours 1975 85 hp and I had to replace both of those items a couple of years ago. I also...

Motor cutting out 1988 Evinrude 8 HP outboard

There is a very small rubber hose in the float bowl. It often disintegrates. Is it there?

1976 6HP Johnson Outboard issues with idle and starting

If it runs for any length of time at mid speed, I doubt the problem is the fuel pump. If you don't have to pump up the bulb when it stalls, you are fine. Have you touched the head when it stalls? If it burns your fingers, it's overheating.

If you are removing the power head I put a small pair of vise grips on the started cord and cut the knot off. You only lose a half inch of rope.

1976 evinrude 85 hp wont plain out, free spins

To elaborate on what racer said, that prop has a rubber cushion between the hub and prop to absorb shock. They harden with age and can slip at high power. It will act like a slipping clutch. I have the same engine and it has happened to me.

    1975 Johnson 85hp No spark

I have the same engine as you do. I replaced everything including the stator and it now runs as if new. It is my opinion that after 50 years, insulation can break down enough so that you can still get a decent reading on a volt/ohm meter but will fail, short, or leak voltage under load.

OMC 9.5 Long Shaft Lower Unit

I never thought of that. I've already put it back together, but it both the driveshaft and shifting rod are approx 6" longer than a known 9.5. See pic. I'll take it apart if I need to.

OMC 9.5 Long Shaft Lower Unit

I helped a guy clean out his garage and he gave me what looks like a 9.5 long shaft lower unit. When I went to put it back together after working on it I noticed the shift rod does not have the indentations to lock it into position that I am used to seeing on the short shafts. Is this correct or...
