1998 40hp hard to start after warm and shutters

new to engines and boating.. i have changed lower impeller because it was running hot and changed thermostat and thermo switch and now a good flow of water, spark plugs, coil packs, carb rebuild, new fuel pump. when i get to the ramp it fires right up and have no issues. will troll around for an hour or so and then the problems begin. i will try to start the engine and won't start, wait and try again etc over and over.. i have to put it in neutral and rev it up and basically slam it into drive. shutters, kicks, hesitates most of the way back to the ramp. once i idle down or get to dock it dies on its own and then i have to use trolling motor to get on the trailer. i have a friend who is a retired mechanic that has tried to help. have compression, spark and timing and idle is good. thought it might have been bad gas, but used new gas in a new gas tank and again this morning used troller motor to get on trailer. any suggestions
 
New factory fuel pump ?----Online source for the pump ?----Test run with another tank and hose.----Load test the battery.----Take starter apart for inspection.----Ohm test starter armature.
 
amazon fuel pump, i did a test run with new hose, fresh mix and tank this morning. don't know how to load test the battery, will youtube that and starter apart? it starts every morning or afternoon. it's the restart on the water after fishing
 
I kept the old one. the original problem was overheating once i figured that out, meanwhile i replaced the fuel pump, should i put that back on to see if that's the issue?
 
my trigger was running 30 ish ohms. should run 700-1000, tested my 9.9 and it's running 790. of course it will arrive when im on vacation, but will update once installed. maybe it will help someone else.
