60 hp mercury 4 stroke, hit log no forward, reverse good

60 hp mercury 4 stroke, hit log last night no forward, reverse good.
I removed the cowling and watched everyting move when i put in reverse, all the same thinigs move when i put it in forward.
The control arm has no resistance on it when you put it in forward, prop freely spins.

Any ideas?

removed cowling everything is still hooked up and moves as it should. however when you put the control arm into forward theres no resistance at all and prop freely turns by hand with no resistance
 
Did you check the gear lube & check for metal?
If you see the linkage under motor moving an equal distance from FWD TO NEUTRAL & NEUTRAL to REV then it's time to drop the gearcase off & continue the investigation.
There are truly no mystery connections in there. Either it works or it is broken.
 
I have no idea.
Did the motor "kick up"?
What speed were you traveling?
Is the prop damaged?

I assume you have a "hub kit" type prop. The plastic sleeve will break if it hits something hard. Maybe it's broken but has enough broken parts jamming together in the hub to hold in reverse. IDK, remove the prop & check it too.

If you have an old fashioned pressed in hub, the rubber hub can slip as well.

If you have an old fashioned pressed in hub, the rubber hub can slip as well. prop and hub are good as it just doesnt go in forward gear, no problems with prop or hub

That's your gear oil? If so, that's BAD.
Did you ever see this log, before or after the clunk? Or are you assuming you hit a log?
I'm going on the belief you felt the gear break & not an impact.
 
Usually the pinion gear (the gear on the bottom of the vertical shaft) which I don't see in that cutaway & forward gear (on the right in your picture) break together. Actually, the pinion gear has less teeth so each tooth works more over its lifespan than forward. Pinion breaks causing collateral damage to forward & reverse. Most damage to forward because it is under load when the pinion fails.

I assume in your case there are enough tidbits of teeth on the pinion gear to drive reverse (gear on the left).

Reverse usually isn't the gear that fails simply because is typically does nothing but spin freely while the pinion gear & forward are doing the work. It gets chipped as collateral damage from broken gear pieces from the other 2 gear.
