Can't find a fuel line connector that doesn't leak

I've now bought six different fuel line connectors for my 8 HP 2006 Honda and every one of them blows fuel at the connection to the motor. Can anybody tell me what fuel line connector to buy?

Do you know what model you have?

There were two models of the 8hp Honda.

There was a BF8A06 or a BF8D06.

The A model is very different from the D model including the fuel line connections.

I suggest very close inspection of BOTH of those items because, very often, leaks ate caused by wear caused from use and vibration.

The pin that pushes the check valve open when the connection is made can wear down as well as the contact area on the check valve itself. Additionally the spring can weaken over time. All this causes poor fit and problems with fuel flow.

But, when it comes to leaks, the latch, as well as the area the latch catches on, will wear and the connection between hose and engine won't fully seal.

I have also seen instances where the latch "rides up" on the ledge it's supposed to catch on and not fully lock. Sometimes this happens because the latch gets bent and bending it back can solve the issue.

Anyway, I've been burned by those quick disconnects not working in the past and looking very carefully at how they work and their condition could save you some headaches as well as money.

Thanks so much. This is great information. I'm pretty sure the engine side connector is good. I ordered the part from boats.net like you suggested. Hopefully that one works. Too bad they don't just make all of the connectors the same.
 
Yes, I can see how confusing all the different ones can be.

But, the manufacturers always need to try and "improve" what they make so as to get ahead of competitors and keep the college grad engineers busy.

I think I may have the same problem. When I pump the primer bulb, I get a gas leak at the fuel line connector next to the engine and once the engine is running the fuel pump cant suck enough gas to keep the engine running. Is that same problem you had?
 
Same problem. BF8A. Ordered the part as referenced in post above. This thing leaks on the exterior of the motor, where the male fuel line connecter on the engine connects to the female side of the fuel connector. The connectors are vertical with the top one the psring loaded connection with the clasp, and the bottom being the fuel receiver. I primed the fuel while shoving tha in as tight as possible obut still leaks out.

I don't see a way for the connection to be assisted via some kind of sealant (sort of like pipe or electrical tape).

Anybody solve their issue ?
 
Check the female connector for a missing or damaged Oring. It should sit in a slot near the opening of the connector.

O-ring was shoved down inside, pulled it out and reinseted .. looked clean and no visible tears. Still sprays out when priming to get motor started. Took fuel line off and connected fuel line directly to motor (male side) and no poblems, started and ran .. but not an ideal situation as every time I remove the fuel line I manage to get fuel spilled primarily all over my hands.

Have a second one ordered (as they sat on backorder forever) and when it comes I hope it fits and seals completely. In the meantime, any home remedies or temp fixes that likely would become permanent ?

Per the part number i ordered the seal shown in the parts manual, but it's 5.5.mm and frankly I don't know exactly where that is suppoed to go .. there is no seat in the connecter for something that small.
 
Yeah, I'm not sure what's going on there.
Do you know or have the frame number of the outboard? The 8A was sold for many years and changes were made to those quick connectors. If you know the year model or have the frame number I can look it up to make sure it matches.

It's an old outboard. Somebody could have swapped out the original male side with a similar one. Look really close at how it's mounted on the case. You may need to buy both halves of the connector to end up with a "no mess" quick release set up.
You wouldn't need it to be original if it will fit on the case and you can bolt it down.
Might need to drill a hole or two to mount it and it probably won't be all that pretty but you won't have gas all over the place and you'll be able to unplug the tank easily when you need to.
 
Well, frame numbers are 7 digit but the series starting with 2000XXXX lists the male connector...
17710-881-840ZB as unavailable.

So, that little trick won't work.


You might take a VERY close look at the Oring you found dislodged and make sure it doesn't have a nick in it or the area where it fits isn't damaged in some way....thin, I know, but I'm trying.

You could try a fitting set from an 8D because they both ARE available. It's something I've thought of doing before but have NEVER tried it myself. Here's the parts pages so you can see for yourself: See item 2 in link below for the male portion

Beyond doing that, you might try shopping aftermarket suppliers to see if there's anything "universal" available for solving this problem. They may have something and it might be less expensive.

Even sites like Jegs and Summit Racing might have some sort of "out-of-the-box" solution. Quick connect gas lines aren't common for most things except outboards.

I have an excellent hydraulic supply shop in my little town and I might try them for ideas if this were happening to me.

I found the male connector listed on yumbo.com the Honda parts discount price retailer in Japan. They are a legit parts source that Australians, Europeans and Canadians use. Not sure what they would nick you for shipping but they say they have it if you want to keep your outboard all original.

It seems to me I remember there was an updated kit that contains both a new design engine end and the later generation hose end to upgrade the connection. But I'm digging this out of the archives of my memory.
