I have a 1998 evinrude 30 hp outboard engine.
when you put her in foward gear she will only work till 1/4 trottle, after that she will rev on the engine. I removed the drain plug in the leg and found the oil to be black.i am thinking the foward gear is gone.my question is do i have to replace they whole leg, or just the gears.and can some one tell me wher i can find info on how to do this work my shelf. thanks"

"Provided it is not actually jumping out of gear it is most likely a spun prop ie the rubber hub has failed.

Mark the end of the shaft and the prop, take it for a spin and then check the marks. If they no longer line up then its a spun prop.

If you do need to work on the gears then get a manual Preferably a manufacturers one which you can get from Marine Engine.. See the link at the top of the page to manuals."

"Lorne.... Gears do not fail in the senario you describe. If a gear problem, the engine would jump out of and back into gear. It would feel that you were constantly hitting an underwater object."
