Exhaust shutters

Are the exhaust shutters on a 1997 4.3 liter mercruiser folded partially down when installed?

Presumably they will sag. Their purpose is to stop a water surge in the event of engine stalling at high RPM and the possibility it could roll backwards.

I understand what they do but am questioning whether I got the correct ones as they are longer than the exhaust manifold. My original ones were gone when I opened it up so don’t know the length they were supposed to be.

Beyond double checking the parts book for correct application I can't answer that.

You know, You ask a stupid question when you dont give us specifics. Its means nothing to us because we are forced to ask questions we never should have to ask.

Do we know what parts you ordered/purchased?
Do we know where you purchased them from?
Did you provide a picture of fhe parts before and after install?
