I’m looking to upgrade from a 6hp to a 9.9. I found a 1972 Johnson for sale for $370.

What is your opinion of this model? Parts available? Generally seen as reliable or not?

Parts wise most of the items you’d need are still readily available. Hard parts like a drive shaft or something you’d have to go to eBay for. 9.9’s were made up to the early ‘00’s I believe. However if it’s not running, or you don’t have the ability to do a compression tests before buying. Then the price is a little steep

There were some issues with the early 74 / 75 / 76 models.-----Points ignition , wrist pin size / bearings . clutch dog and exhaust relief plugging.----Did I say I prefer the 84 / 85 models ?

Yes, I agree. I still sell a lot of the 9.9 to 15 horsepowers and often get upwards of $1,000 for each motor with a one-year warranty and nice steel fuel tank. I just sold this 92 short shaft manual start in mint condition for $1,500. There is probably not a better fishing motor that has ever been made. And yes that includes Yamahas, as I just spent 2 weeks waiting for parts for a customers 8 HP Yamaha 2 stroke.
