How do you tell what gen a outdrive is

Your question lacks any detail. 1960s, 1980s, 2000s vintage?

Mercruiser Model 0, #1, #2, #3, TR, TRS, Alpha, Bravo?

If you are familiar, by looking at it (although the R/MR/Alpha gen 1 can deceive).
Serial number?

If Alpha Drives

If it is a 80's its Gen 1 type

1990 and newer is Gen 2

Visual difference is.

Where the upper gear case and lower gear case connect,
Gen 1 has nuts in pockets near front of drive.
Gen 2 has 4 visable bolts and nuts (2 per side)

When removing the trim cylinders DO NOT PUT A HAMMER ON THE PINS
Go buy a pitman arm puller, do a slight grinding mod to the legs and remove it that way

you are missing the e clip on the upper end of the lift cylinder nearest the camera. as others have sent gen 2
