Hello I have a 1984 35 hp mercury I can’t get it to start at all!! Even with dumping mixed fuel in the carb while cranking and even tried starting fluid but only couple short bursts. I have spark on both plugs good spark brand new battery I have 137psi and 134psi on compression brand new fuel pump kit new float and adjusted taken apart twice and cleaned thoroughly. Even while dumping fuel in the face of carb while cranking the spark plugs are still dry. Is this reed failure?
 
Air, fuel, compression, ignition and timing. If you have checked all of that it should run.. You didn't say if this is a 2 stroke, but if it won't run with the Prop in the water, maybe the Reed valves are stuck open? You have to move air through the engine for it to run. Hope this helps.
 
It's 1984, of course it a 2 stroke.
If you have spark (properly timed), compression, fuel & air or should run even if only poorly.
*Is this motor new to you?
*If YES, what kind of lies did the seller tell you?
If NO, did the problem slowly develop or run good today & not run next time? How long did it sit between when it ran & now?
*.035" spark plug gap is NOT enough to test for a good spark.
*Does it start on a hose but not in a lake?
*Has the flywheel key failed?

I’ve owned the boat for 6 or 7 years now it was my first boat and I love working on things cars semis etc..when I bought it ran great after little idle adjustment and normal water pump replacement but the last time me and my daughter took it out I happen to look back and noticed the water pump not running this year and thought no big deal only had a half mile to get back to truck well right before I got to the ramp it died and I just loaded it with trolling motor…well I swapped water pump then went to start it and it was dumping fuel down the exhaust and wouldn’t run so I researched and all signs pointed to fuel pump kit and or float well my float was bad so I replaced it and adjusted it I have fuel to my main jet and the fuel pump diaphragm was ruptured in all 3 spots it’s the triangle style so I thought for sure that was the case. Anyway got a kit from dealer and rebuilt it now I can’t get it to even spit like it don’t even wanna run I have used mixed fuel straight in the carb and starting fluid and my plugs are dry when I pull them out…what am I missing . And my spark is blue and will stretch 3inches or more when testing spark is not my problem and I’ve never done anything to mess with timing and I don’t believe keyway has failed but I guess I don’t know but I would imagine it would have the normal timing noises I recognize
