Yes, perhaps I got hold of some bad LSD that made this difficult for me!

I set valves with a compression gauge, cranking on the starter
tighten until compression drops off
loosen until rockers rattle
split the difference
puts me DEAD CENTER of the adjustment range of the nut every time and I get to watch the actual effect on each cylinder as I go.
