    To properly change the base gasket on that motor you have to remove the exhaust tube. BE REALLY CAREFUL WITH THOSE BOLTS. They're a little 1/4-20 made out of cheese and like to break off. Go slow on them.

    Have you determined if it's just 2 stroke oily residue leaking out of the motor or gear oil? Johnson made outboards for 80 years, nobody can tell you how hard it is to replace a seal without knowing what you have.

    Is it black sticky oil that smells like gas? If that's the case it's normal, coming from unburned 2 stroke oil. If it's gear oil then you need to fix the leak.
